Emmet County Zoning Ordinance Article 8 Section 801: Principal uses permitted subject to special conditions
The Emmet County zoning ordinance’s definition of farming operations includes the use of marketing produce at roadside stands and farm markets. Farming operations are permitted as a by-right use in the majority of zoning districts. The ordinance also states that the regulations for commercial farm operations, as defined in the ordinance, shall not be interpreted as interfering with the Michigan Right-to-Farm Act.
Direct-to-consumer marketing channels, such as roadside stands and farmers’ markets, may provide economic opportunities for producers and promote greater access to locally grown foods (Low et al. 2012). The Emmet County Zoning Ordinance promotes greater food access and supports local producers.
