Washtenaw County A Resolution Adopting a Local Vendor Preference Purchasing Policy
The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution in 2014 to enact a Local Vendor Preference Policy. The policy encourages the procurement of goods and services from local vendors located within Washtenaw County and the State of Michigan with the intention of promoting economic growth and regional job development. The policy applies to all Washtenaw County-operated programs, excluding federally funded programs that prohibit a preference, and offers tiered discounts on bids for eligible county and state businesses.
Local food procurement policies and programs are one of many strategies that can help promote a more equitable food system (PolicyLink 2015). By requiring that county departments and programs source items from local vendors, including farmers and entrepreneurs of color, institutions can increase access to healthy foods for staff and clients and spread awareness among community members about the benefits of supporting local foods.
